Water Quality Assessment and Pollution Source Identification of a Semi-urban Water Body Near to Waste Dumping Zone, Katwa, India, Using Pollution Indices and Geostatistical Methods

In our present investigation, the water quality and trophic status of semi-urban water body near solid waste dumping site at Katwa, West Bengal, India were estimated using various pollution indices and represented via geospatial techniques. In relation, the potential sources of pollution were evaluated by using multivariate statistical applications. The appraisal of the examined water body reveals that the pH is neutral to slightly alkaline in nature (pH 7.2–8) and the other physicochemical parameters are found well under the recommended value of standard guidelines for drinking water (BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) IS: 10500 in Indian standard for drinking water specification, second revision. Bureau of Indian Standards, Government of India, New Delhi, 2012) except Fe. The estimated water quality index (WQI) value of water body varies from 32.43 to 42.13 and is classified as “Good quality” which is intended for drinking/domestic purposes. The calculated organic pollution index (OPI) value of the water samples ranged from 1.90 to 2.03 and lies under “Lightly Polluted” to “Begin to contaminated” category. But the geospatial representation of eutrophication index (EI) values ranged from 7.08 to 8.60, suggesting the condition of water body is “eutrophic.” The multivariate statistical investigations such as Pearson’s correlation matrix (PCM), principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis (CA) clearly distinct the sources of pollution in monitored water body which are mainly derived from several anthropogenic and natural origins like leachate from solid waste dumpsite, atmospheric disposition, soil erosion, surface runoff and municipal waste disposal, etc. Thus, the current investigation also serves requisite suggestion to take necessary actions for restoration and rejuvenation of water body and implement the proper solid management policies to safeguard the environment.
