In today’s dizzying world, many may be surprised by the inclusion of this short historical chapter of the development of collision theory. The goal is to show the hard work that many brilliant minds had to understand what sometimes today seems obvious. The effect of a collision was known since ancient times. Aristotle (384–322 BC) in his Questiones Mechanicae recognized the difference between the pressure exerted on a still body and the effect of the collision with an object moving very fast. Then followed centuries of research in which it was necessary to distinguish the concepts of mass and weight, because as Professor Mach points out, Galileo always thought that these two concepts were the same and geniuses like Huygens in his works always wrote “corpus majus” (big body) and “corpus minus” (small body). After these beginnings, came the work of many research giants such as Descartes, Wallis, Wren, Huygens Newton, Euler, between others. With this brief historical overview, it is possible to conclude, that the basis for the study of collision theory has been given for hundreds of years. Today the advent of computers has facilitated the study of the multiple situations that may arise in a collision investigation.
