The future of plastic surgery, the continuing ability of the specialty to deliver high-quality care and engage in productive innovation, rests squarely on our capability to produce well-educated, well-trained, ethical, and compassionate plastic surgeons. Nevertheless, the challenges have never been as enormous to do so. If the future of plastic surgery is inextricably tied to the future of graduate medical education, the successful accomplishment and implementation of that education should be the business of all plastic surgeons, both academic and private practice. To transform our present system of resident education to one that not only addresses the current challenges but is also flexible to endure into the future requires a substantial alteration in didactics, embracing adult learning principles, universal incorporation of mobile digital technology into graduate medical education, adoption of approved tenets in teaching motor skills, and incorporation of objective methods in assessment of resident performance [1].
