In this research project, results presented analyze the social impact originated from the processes of design, development, and monitoring of a rural, sustainable project: the provision of water and sanitation in 40 rural houses in the village of Chalhuanca-Yanque in the province of Caylloma, both located in the department of Arequipa. In the first stage, an information search regarding the technical, geographical, and social aspects was conducted in order to determine the most appropriate technology to be applied to solve the problem of water provisioning and effluent treatment in the community of Chalhuanca. In the second stage, the design and installation of the modules were undertaken, taking into consideration the variables presented in the previous stage. In the third stage, a monitoring of the use and maintenance of the modules was conducted. The results indicate that the social, economic, and environmental impacts are all determining factors for the sustainability of the project. The use of the installations very much depends on the idiosyncrasies of the townspeople benefiting from them, and who are adjusting to the new installations. The participation of the townspeople in the execution and monitoring of the project is fundamental in order to add an intangible value to the project as well as to guarantee its sustainability and possible replication and subsequent application in other isolated areas deprived of resources.
