Barriers to the Implementation of Integrated Design Processes—The Case of the Construction Industry in Quebec, Canada

The construction industry is a significant sector of the economy in the Quebec province of Canada. Despite its importance, the Quebec construction industry is a complex ecosystem in which integrative and collaborative strategies, such as integrated design (ID) and integrated project delivery (IPD), do not emerge naturally. To better understand the factors that influence the adoption of innovative strategies in construction ecosystems, we explore the barriers that hinder the implementation of ID in the construction sector. Based on these results, we identify five categories of barriers: cultural, financial, legal, cognitive, and technological. The empirical study reveals that the synergy between IPD and ID can enhance their mutual implementations in construction projects. IPD enablers of organizational, cognitive, and technological integrations can address the identified challenges to the implementation of ID processes during projects’ life-cycle. Based on these results, we develop an IPD-ID framework and propose some recommendations for the effective implementation of IDP.
