Analysis of LEED Certification Impact on Building Energy Consumption in Practice—A Data-Driven Approach

The construction industry is a major contributor to global energy consumption and carbon emission. According to International Energy Agency (IEA) report, total energy consumption in the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector increased from 144 exajoules (EJ) in 2015 to more than 150 EJ in 2019, which is 38% of total global final energy demand. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) has long been the most adopted sustainable building rating system worldwide. The adoption of this comprehensive ranking system is meant to remediate the negative environmental impacts of the building sector by improving the behavior of buildings during and following construction. The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of achieved LEED score on the energy performance of certified buildings to better evaluate the actual benefit of obtaining a LEED certificate in terms of energy savings and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Apart from the direct comparison of LEED and non-LEED buildings, an extrinsic evaluation approach was adopted, where the contribution of the LEED certificate to the prediction of energy consumption is examined quantitatively. Data from 503 LEED-certified buildings were collected to develop several regression models to predict energy consumption. In order to evaluate the significance of the LEED score, models are trained with and without their LEED score. The proposed models and analyses show that the LEED score is not a strong predictor for energy savings as expected and promoted by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) claims. Moreover, the higher levels of LEED certification did not show any significantly higher levels of energy and GHG savings. The results suggest that more investigation of the USGBC ranking system and predicting the LEED score as complementary aspects of this study with more detailed analysis and data will be both worthwhile to verify the exact contribution of the LEED certification.
