‘Strategic Allies’: Cultivating Allyship as a Tool to Help Build a Stronger and More Inclusive Military Culture

Fostering allyshipAllyship in organizations requires more than just good intentions. Meaningful allyshipAllyship is behavioural—both on the individual and organizational levels—and requires active participation from individuals across an organization to dismantle systems of oppression. It means fostering a cultureCulture that encourages individual reflection, understanding, and action to become an allyAllies, but also demands larger cultural and systemic shifts that allow new voices to step forward as others step back. Informed by best practices from psychology and organizational development, in this chapter, we outline the key features of allyshipAllyship and the opportunities and challenges of fostering allyshipAllyship in militaryMilitary and defence organizations, and provide concrete suggestions for cultivating allyshipAllyship to help build stronger and more inclusive militaryMilitary and defence organizations.
