Through the creation of a low-cost, low barrier-to-entry Multispectral Imaging (MSI) system called MISHA (Multispectral Imaging System for Historical Artifacts) and the development of software and user manuals to support the processing and visualization of images captured by the system, we have demonstrated that scholars in a variety of humanities fields, library, archive, and museum professionals, conservators, and other researchers and practitioners can use such a system to capture and process images in an easy-access manner. The image capture and processing facilitate ways to better represent, interpret, characterize, uncover and, ultimately, gain access to collections across a wide range of artifacts and constituent materials. For the purposes of this chapter, interactive media applies to two facets: both the material collections and the digital surrogates rendered through the MISHA capture, processing, and visualization. We examine image processing and visualization techniques as exemplars to frame methods for enhancing our understanding and furthering access to collections. We demonstrate the utility of such a system through four examples of artifacts we have examined, imaged, processed, and evaluated.
