Surgical site infections are an important burden to inpatient surgery, with an incidence ranging from 2% to 5%, a 2- to 11-fold increase in related mortality rates, prolonged hospitalization, and increased costs of care. Patient blood management is a multifactorial and multiprofessional bundle of evidence-based measures designed to maintain hemoglobin concentration and/or red cell mass, optimize hemostasis, minimize bleeding/blood loss during surgery, and enhance individual tolerance to postoperative anemia to avoid unnecessary blood transfusions and improve postoperative outcomes. The aim of this chapter is to review the relationship between surgical site infections and patient blood management based on the available evidence.
