School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a critical role in enhancing student outcomes within general education and special education programs. As experts in speech, language, communication, and literacy development, SLPs screen, assess, and provide evidence-based interventions to students with spoken and/or written communication disorders. Importantly, SLPs also collaborate with school personnel to offer suggestions for curriculum development and provide educators with effective strategies to increase a student’s access to the classroom curriculum when a communication disorder limits participation and learning. This chapter reviews the SLP’s role in supporting students with speech, language, and communication disorders in schools, including those related to screening, assessment, and implementation of evidence-based interventions, as well as modes of collaboration between SLPs and other school personnel.
