Engaging Caregivers in the Special Education Process
摘要
Caregiver involvement is critical to student success, particularly for students receiving special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This chapter explores the historical and legal foundations of caregiver involvement in special education, the barriers that hinder full engagement, and strategies to foster effective caregiver-school partnerships. Key barriers include logistical, cultural, and experiential challenges, alongside the need for schools to develop inclusive communication practices. The chapter also provides evidence-based strategies for schools to promote collaboration and outlines resources to empower caregivers in advocating for their child’s needs. Through a comprehensive understanding of these dynamics, schools can build stronger, more inclusive partnerships that support the academic and social development of students with disabilities.
