Students with ID or ESN and their caregivers benefit from strong family partnerships with educators. Through family partnership, caregivers and educators can share, plan, and work together to repair the disconnection caregivers sometimes feel toward the educational system and improve students’ and families’ quality of life. In this chapter, we describe the characteristics of successful family partnerships, the experiences of families, and common barriers to partnership. Research-supported strategies with clear implications for educators are described throughout.
