This chapter discusses some of the well-documented challenges associated with special education practice in the United States and recommendations for addressing them. Challenges discussed include Individualized Education Program quality, access to effective instruction and support, poor teacher preparation and training, issues with special educator teacher hiring and retention, working conditions, and power imbalances between parents/guardians and school teams. Recommendations for addressing these challenges include providing appropriate oversight of teacher preparation and practice, authentically engaging and partnering with parents/guardians, and identifying, describing, and better understanding examples of model special education practice.
