Debates about the future of journalism are dominated by the incorporeal and those things we cannot touch such as algorithms, artificial intelligence, data and the digital. Historically too, the professional norm of objectivity has relied on a degree of detachment—journalists maintaining their physical and emotional distance in reporting. As such, the body with its sensory knowledge and engagement has been overlooked in journalism studies. Yet, touch manifests in what journalists do and how news work impacts them; in the ways that journalists access and engage audiences and in how journalism is conceived as an occupation. The question this paper asks is: how does the incorporation of touch inform the conception and practice of journalism? Using Aristotle’s philosophy on touch as a theoretical framework and situating the discussion of touch within journalism’s emotional turn and recent work on embodiment, this chapter proposes a seven-step protocol for embedding ‘tactual awareness’ in journalism. It concludes by considering how the embodied experience of touch is implicated in practical and epistemological discussions about journalism now and in the future.
