This study examines ‘Dokuz8Haber’ (Dokuz8News), a citizen news network operating within Turkey’s complex socio-political landscape. In this context, we explore the extent to which this grassroots, participatory media initiative utilises digitalisation and investigates the multifaceted benefits of the digital sphere. It is essential to recognise that the perspective presented in this study firmly adheres to an academic ethos that rejects the concept of technological determinism. This study does not align with the viewpoint that digital technology inherently wields extraordinary influence over the political economy, as argued by Robert McChesney (Digital disconnect: How capitalism is turning the Internet against democracy. New Press, 2013, p. 15). Rather, the focus remains on the academic exploration of media and cultural studies within the complex intellectual landscape of Turkey. This inquiry is driven by the constant pursuit of innovative media-related strategies, aiming to empower marginalised groups, the ‘others,’ and the broader population against the challenges posed by Islamic neoliberal authoritarianism.
