Shared mobility systems like car sharing and bike sharing allow for individual urban mobility without the need to own a vehicle. Despite the rapid growth of these systems in recent years, providers still often fail to operate them profitably, mainly because of low fleet utilization which stems from dynamic imbalances between supply and demand. In this context, the author’s dissertation “Demand Management in Shared Mobility Systems” [7] proposes an alternative to the traditional supply-sided approach to counter these imbalances. That is, instead of actively relocating vehicles, the developed demand management approaches comprise pricing and availability control at both the tactical and operational decision making levels. This article summarizes parts of the author’s cumulative dissertation, focusing on contributions that have resulted in journal publications to date. In the course of the OR conference 2023 in Hamburg, the author was awarded with the dissertation award of the German Operations Research Society (GOR).
