In rural (or sparsely populated) areas public transport lines are often operated with low frequencies. These lines used on the first mile of a passenger travel chain often connect the starting point of a travel chain with the nearest hub served by high-frequency lines, where the passengers change the line. For delivering a high-quality, attractive timetable for their passengers, public transport operators try to enable short connection times. This is challenging especially when a line serves several hubs and different travel chains must be coordinated. We propose a new method for integrating a travel chain into a periodic timetable to minimize passenger connection times. We will illustrate the potential of our approach through a small case study of a bus line in Switzerland.
