Adaptive Sports: Considerations for Athletes with Physical and Cognitive Disabilities
摘要
This chapter overviews the opportunities in adaptive sports for healthcare providers, including a background that sports physicians, therapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning specialists, and other sports medicine staff can and should use to care for athletes with physical, auditory, visual, and intellectual disabilities. The chapter describes sporting opportunities for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities, followed by training recommendations and injury prevention techniques. It describes the treatment of acute and chronic injuries, rehabilitation techniques, and return to sporting recommendations. Healthcare providers often can be the first to introduce individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities to sports while also helping them maintain fitness and wellness. By understanding adaptations and treatment techniques, the healthcare team can improve the health and well-being of athletes with disabilities.
