The ankle joint is a hinge-type joint formed by the talus, tibial plafond, medial malleolus, and lateral malleolus. Noncontractile joint stability is provided joint surface congruency and capsuloligamentous structures. Dynamic ankle joint stability is attained by a combination of extrinsic muscles from the lower leg and intrinsic foot musculature. The stability of the foot and ankle is an important function in the lower extremity support during gait and posture.
