The decision to return to sports after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is a complex one and depends on several factors, such as the type and intensity of the sport, the individual’s preoperative activity level, and the postoperative rehabilitation protocol. While some patients are able to return to their preoperative level of sports activity, others may need to modify their activities to avoid high-impact and high-risk movements that could potentially damage the implant or the joint. In this chapter, we discuss the current evidence on returning to sports after UKA. This chapter will focus on an overview of the indications and contraindications for sports participation after surgery, as well as the factors that may affect the success of returning to sports. Moreover, the specific considerations for different types of sports and recommendations for postoperative rehabilitation and return to sports protocols will be discussed. Overall, the goal of this chapter is to provide healthcare professionals and patients with a comprehensive understanding of the factors that should be taken into consideration when deciding to return to sports after UKA, as well as the strategies to maximize the success and safety of this process.
