Fractures Around the Elbow Related to Sports
摘要
Fractures of the elbow are not uncommon and can have profound implications in an athlete’s career. The athletes involved in overhead throwing sports and axial loading on elbow such as gymnasts are most prone to fractures around the elbow with a preponderance in young males. The most common fractures around the elbow in athletes involve coronoid, olecranon, radial head, medial epicondyle, and sublime tubercle avulsion and they can also sustain elbow dislocation. Most of the undisplaced fractures and stress fractures can be treated with short-term immobilization of 2–3 weeks followed by aggressive rehabilitation to regain motion and strength. A more aggressive approach is taken with displaced fractures around the elbow in the athletes to achieve stable fixation and preserve vascularity and muscle environment. The purposes of this review is to discuss the management of elbow fractures in athletes to highlight treatment impact on the return to play.
