Shoulder Arthroplasty and Sports
摘要
The number of shoulder replacements performed throughout the world continues to increase along with the expected activity level of the patients undergoing these procedures. Returning to a chosen sport is extremely important for active individuals and directly impacts their quality of life measures following a shoulder arthroplasty. Focused studies regarding this topic are limited with a wide variation in quality and outcomes throughout the available literature. Shoulder surgeons continue to focus on improving techniques and rehabilitation programs to allow for higher levels of activity in these patients and to provide a lasting solution even with high-demand sports participation. Based on the current literature, the evidence supports patients returning to many sports following shoulder arthroplasty, especially if they were already participating in those sports prior to their procedure but much of the data are in the short to medium term. It is clear that additional work is needed to define long-term results following these procedures including expected outcomes in specific sports, especially overhead sports and weight lifting, and to develop specific rehab protocols for the given sports.
