Shoulder Anatomy and Biomechanics of the Rotator Interval

It is now well accepted that the rotator interval is a unique anatomic structure that plays a crucial part in normal shoulder mechanics. The rotator interval is a triangle-shaped structure that contains several essential anatomical structures. The triangle’s superior side is the anterior margin of the supraspinatus (Ssp) tendon, while its inferior side is the upper margin of the subscapularis (SSc) tendon. The function of the rotator interval is to contribute to glenohumeral stabilization, restrict excessive external rotation, flexion, adduction, and extension, and stabilize the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT).
