Researchers in the interpretative fields of management and organization theory often find themselves theorizing about others. Managers, leaders and professional practitioners are in focus on the researchers’ quest to explain, explore and understand their decisions and doings. Staying focused on what others do tends to obscure the researchers own preconceived notions and taken-for-granted assumptions. Thus, this chapter aims to turn the gaze toward the author, in a reflexive way, and explores the researcher—that engages in a research project. Starting from an existential position and the work with a dissertation in becoming, many avenues emerge for reflecting upon what it means to be—and being in the process of becoming a researcher. This chapter explores the existential endeavors of writing a dissertation and aims to wonder about what it means, and does to an aspiring researcher, when embarking on such a grand quest.
