Database systems have traditionally been designed assuming that I/Os are slow and computation is fast. Over the last decade or so, a new wave of SSDs has been challenging this assumption by presenting unprecedented performance and innovative interfaces. The two, performance and interfaces, go hand in hand: the new interfaces create the possibility to shape the device to the application’s needs, which, in turn, eliminates the barriers to producing higher performance.
