Database systems have traditionally been designed assuming that I/Os are slow and computation is fast. Over the last decade or so, a new wave of SSDs has been challenging this assumption by presenting unprecedented performance and innovative interfaces. The two, performance and interfaces, go hand in hand: the new interfaces create the possibility to shape the device to the application’s needs, which, in turn, eliminates the barriers to producing higher performance.

Database systems have traditionally been designed assuming that I/Os are slow and computation is fast. Over the last decade or so, a new wave of SSDs has been challenging this assumption by presenting unprecedented performance and innovative interfaces.
