The Delta Rule, Backpropagation, and Matrix Representations
摘要
This chapter continues the presentation of perceptron-based networks. As noted at the end of ► Chap. 15 , Minsky and Papert’s book Perceptrons (1969) described limitations within this early family of neural networks. As demonstrated in ► Sect. 15.3.2 , the exclusive-or problem could not be solved by the then-current single-layer perceptron. Olazaran (1996), a historian of the “perceptron controversy,” has suggested that the limitations implied in the Perceptrons book helped produce a shift in research funding toward the newer and then very promising work in symbol-based AI, introduced in Part II.
