Pharmacotherapy for Alcohol Use Disorder

Pharmacotherapy for alcohol use disorder (AUD) involves using medications to help individuals reduce or stop alcohol consumption. This chapter reviews management of acute alcohol withdrawal, Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications for AUD, non-FDA-approved medications, and future directions of AUD pharmacotherapy. It provides a detailed examination of the efficacy, mechanisms of action, and clinical applications of various pharmacotherapies, including naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram, gabapentin, topiramate, ondansetron, varenicline, baclofen, nalmefene, and prazosin.
