Addressing the UN Climate Summit in 2018 as representative of the People of the World, a 92-year-old David Attenborough urged global leaders to take effective action against climate change. The moment was solemn. Attenborough’s stature as the “inventor” of the natural world documentary in the 1950s, and the genre’s consolidation over the past six decades, have made him a privileged witness of the ways nature has changed at the hands of man and also a respected authority on matters concerning the natural world. This chapter pioneers looking at Attenborough’s work from the perspective of literary journalism. It analyzes the genesis of the natural history documentary and the part played by Attenborough in creating its narrative style. It also locates Attenborough’s work, both written and televised, in the field of literary journalism.
