An uncomplicated cystitis is an acute, sporadic, or recurrent lower urinary tract infection, limited to non-pregnant women with no known relevant anatomical and functional abnormality within the urinary tract or comorbidities. Uncomplicated cystitis is primarily caused by Enterobacteriaceae such as Escherichia coli. An accurate diagnosis of uncomplicated cystitis can be based on a focused history of lower urinary tract symptoms and the absence of vaginal discharge or irritation. Urine culture should be performed if acute pyelonephritis is suspected, if symptoms do not resolve or recur within 4 weeks, in patients with atypical symptoms and in pregnant woman. Clinical success for the treatment of uncomplicated cystitis is significantly more likely in women treated with antimicrobials than placebo. Therefore, therapy with either fosfomycin trometamol, pivmecillinam, or nitrofurantoin is recommended for the first-line treatment of uncomplicated cystitis.
