Penile curvature is a common problem amongst men, with a potential impact on their physical, sexual and psychological wellbeing. Whilst congenital abnormal penile development has a potential detrimental effect upon the man, Peyronie’s disease may result in pain and other symptoms such as penile deformities and shortening, erectile dysfunction, plaque formation and instability. Whilst conservative options are available for use during the active inflammatory phase, surgical treatments will be needed for many men with more severe deformities. These include intralesional injections, plication, plaque incision and grafting, or potentially penile prosthesis implantation for those who also have erectile dysfunction. Unfortunately, adverse effects of such procedures are significant, including worsening erectile function, penile shortening and recurrent curvature, amongst others. Thus, such surgeries are reserved for patients whose deformities impair the ability for sexual penetration and require extensive preoperative counselling to ensure informed consent and maximize patient satisfaction outcomes.
