Improvements in our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and overactive bladder (OAB), combined with innovations in medicine and technology, have led to numerous advances in the treatment options for these conditions. Several emerging pharmacotherapies for these conditions have been developed and are in pre-clinical or early clinical trials, and technological developments have led to newer devices for tibial and sacral nerve stimulation which appear promising in pilot studies. Newer technologies such as non-ablative laser treatment for SUI and radiofrequency ablation for OAB are reviewed and require further clinical testing to determine safety and efficacy. These therapies have the potential to alter our current management algorithm for treating female SUI and OAB, but larger-scale, randomised, and long-term studies will be required to assess their place in the treatment pathway of these conditions.
