Advances in technology have led to the development of several promising surgical treatments for men with lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic obstruction in recent years. The primary aim has been to achieve satisfactory efficacy with reduced perioperative morbidity, length of stay and sexual dysfunction. Emerging surgical treatments for benign prostatic obstruction (BPO) include ablative techniques, embolisation, novel mechanical devices, and alternative methods of enucleation. The most promising emerging therapies are summarised in this chapter, with a description of the mechanism of action of each technique followed by a review of efficacy and safety data. Although early data for these techniques appear promising, long-term randomised trials are required to prove efficacy, safety, durability and generalisability before recommendations can be made on their use. As this evidence emerges, urologists will be able to offer truly personalised care based on the patient’s values and preferences.

摘要
