This chapter explores three models of corporate governance for nature and provides practical examples of their implementation. The incorporation of nature into corporate governance is examined from the perspective of whether nature can be a shareholder, stakeholder, or director of a company. The conclusions—that it can in some circumstances and, in fact, has been in some legal systems—are reached through analysis of academic literature and practical examples. Indigenous decision-making practices are also reviewed in an acknowledgment that while the approaches to corporate governance examined in this chapter are examples of legal creativity and imagination, they bear close resemblance to the customary traditions of various Indigenous communities around the world.
