This study addresses the gap in research on developing real-world problem-posing abilities in Thai preservice teachers lacking prior experience in mathematical modelling. The research aimed to answer two questions. (1) What are the characteristics of an effective learning trajectory that enhance preservice teachers’ real-world problem-posing abilities? (2) What types of real-world problems do preservice teachers pose throughout this learning trajectory? There were two key findings. (1) The effective learning trajectory comprised two main characteristics: (a) A gradual progression of problem-posing activities; and (b) Facilitation of productive peer interactions through group work and discussion forums. (2) Preservice teachers mostly posed border or wrapper problems with realistic contexts but lacking complexity, assumption-making opportunities, and the need for additional information—crucial elements of modelling problems.
