This case study examines the factors at work as mathematical modelling is introduced as a mandatory topic in Year 1 through to Year 10 in Australian schools. The purpose of the study is to delineate the factors which influence implementation, both political and pedagogical. The influence of print and software publishers is considered, with reference to the resources made available to date. The implementation of mathematical modelling in Australian schools has been delayed and uneven. Two years after publication of a curriculum which contains mathematical modelling, the eventual shape of the implemented curriculum remains unclear.
