The previous chapters have analysed the difficulties a patient may face in purchasing a medicine, even though supported by the prescription and the information he or she may receive, in written or verbal form, from the doctor during the examination and from the pharmacist during dispensing of the medicine. However, some medicines do not need to be prescribed by the doctor but can be purchased independently by the patient. In these cases, even more so than in the case of medicines dispensed on prescription, it is necessary for the information accompanying the medicine to be comprehensive, understandable and to make certain information available to the patient before the medicine is purchased. This is the case here with over-the-counter analgesics.
