Applied Improvisation Methods for Corporate Spaces
摘要
In applied improvisation, techniques from rehearsals for traditional theater are used in nontraditional settings. As corporate industries become increasingly complex with more technology and changing environments, finding new tools and frameworks is crucial to promote growth and change. Applied improvisation methods (AIMs; singular AIM) offer organizations tools to generate innovative and creative solutions for navigating chaos and complexity to build resilience. Formats for introducing AIMs into corporate spaces include professional development workshops, organizational consultancy, training, and long-form project involvement. AIMs can be used to increase professional development skills, such as active listening, communication, adaptability, presence, collaboration, and tolerance for uncertainty. Practical approaches include developing psychologically safe workshop environments, using low to progressively higher-risk activities, and designing participant-driven workshops aligned to client goals, among other tactics. AIMs require reframing games and structured play into corporate terminology, the purposeful design of activities and debriefing activities for deeper experiential learning. Research suggests that for increased impact and long-term skill development, applied improvisation workshops require multiple sessions over time. However, short workshops can be beneficial for addressing communication goals within limited company timelines. Therefore, long-form program offerings and project-based involvement are recommended for lasting organizational growth.
