Narcissism

Narcissism is acting in one’s best interests while keeping the aspirations and demands of others at risk because of the lack of empathy and sympathy. Narcissistic leaders behave in an autocratic and egoistic manner by giving preference to their personal and individual desires at the cost of the well-being of others. The narcissistic style of leadership has both positive and negative outcomes. Positive outcomes include bold and daring vision, pursuit of an aggressive growth strategy, career building of followers, etc. Negative outcomes include deterioration in the morale of followers, unrealistic expectations of leaders, rough execution, etc. To mitigate the negative impacts of narcissistic leadership, organizations should create accountability measures, encourage ethical leadership, and ensure a suitable work culture that strikes a balance between ambition and compassion. This entry attempts to explore the concept of narcissism and narcissistic leadership, its pros and cons, and possible remedies to minimize the negative impacts of narcissistic leadership.
