Self-actualization is theorized to be the internal motivation to become one’s true, unified self. Critical to self-actualization theory is that humans are intrinsically motivated towards a unified self, and when left to their own needs and desires, will pursue it without external control. Thus, permeating definitions of self-actualization are humanistic, person-focused values such as self-directedness and trust. Self-actualization is most closely associated with Humanistic Psychology, and in particular, Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. Kurt Goldstein is credited with the first usage of the term, self-actualization.
