Since the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI in November 2022, the popularity of Generative AI (GenAI) chatbots has surged. This article explores the nature of GenAI chatbots, distinguishing them from traditional rule-based chatbots, and highlighting their potential for data-driven learning (DDL). The high accessibility of GenAI chatbots underpins their popularity and sustained use among contemporary learners. However, concerns about the ‘hallucinations’ of GenAI chatbots and the authenticity of the language they generate raise questions about their readiness as a DDL tool. This entry presents three ways in which GenAI chatbots may be integrated into DDL. It also highlights how recent advances in GenAI chatbots have made it easy for teachers to create custom GPTs for academic writing and for learners to receive personalised and comprehensive feedback on interactive role-plays. The article concludes with an outlook on the future of DDL with GenAI integration.
