Usage-based approaches to language and language acquisition work from the assumption that language structure results from natural language use and that language is learned through a person’s exposure to and experience with language in communicative situations. Data-driven learning (DDL) as a pedagogical method involves the use of a corpus or of corpus-derived materials in contexts of language teaching and learning, as well as learner engagement with authentic language. This entry summarises the main tenets of usage-based approaches to second-language acquisition (SLA) and discusses the relevance and significance of usage-based SLA for DDL.
