Teacher education in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) goes back more than four decades. By tracing its developmental history, this entry serves as a foundation for others in the CALL Teacher Education section of the Palgrave Encyclopedia of Computer-Assisted Language Learning. It begins with reports of examples of pioneering CALL courses and professional organizational support for language teachers. It then shifts to describing how CALL moved from the periphery to being a significant element in language teacher preparation and professional development through the actions of professional organizations, journal publications and edited volumes.
