As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into education, the necessity for AI literacy among language teachers has grown. Language teachers recognize the need for further training in this area. This article explores the main components of AI literacy for language educators, structured using the TESOL technology standards. It emphasizes foundational knowledge of AI, particularly generative AI, the integration of AI tools into teaching practices, and the use of AI in assessment practices. The importance of continuous professional development and ethical considerations, including biases reproduced by the AI tools from the training data of the LLM, problematic AI outputs, and data privacy, are identified as the most relevant aspects for teacher training. AI-literate teachers are essential for ensuring ethical and effective integration into language learning as well as guiding students in the responsible use of AI. As AI continues to evolve, educators must engage in ongoing professional development and increased collaboration to stay informed and able to deal with the new realities. This preparedness will enable teachers to harness AI’s potential, enhancing educational outcomes while maintaining a balanced and critical perspective on its role in the classroom.
