This entry explores the design and development of digital games (DGs) for language learning contexts, including both virtual and augmented learning environments. It examines how researchers, learning designers and language educators have increasingly explored the potential of self-designed DGs, to provide interactive, versatile and effective teaching–learning tools for language learners and teachers. These tools aim to enhance learning both within and beyond the traditional classroom setting. Through selected case studies, the entry highlights various aspects and challenges associated with designing DGs to meet the needs of learners and teachers. Of particular interest are findings from studies that identify design frameworks and pedagogical strategies for creating effective game-based environments, integrating them into curricula and developing mechanisms for learner assessment and feedback. This entry provides insight into the evolving landscape of game-based language learning and its potential to transform educational practices.

摘要
