Biological Effects of Muri (Byrsonima spp.)

One of the biomes with the greatest biodiversity on the planet is the Amazon. Tropical biomes are known for providing many varieties of fruits. Increased knowledge about the nutritional value and benefits of fruit consumption, as well as the growing concern about the relationship between diet and health, has resulted in a higher worldwide demand for fruits. The botanical genus Byrsonima encompasses over 150 cataloged species of this family, with occurrences widely registered throughout tropical America, ranging from the Caribbean to Argentina, and also in the Amazon rainforest. This genus is characterized by deciduous, selective xerophytes, heliophytes, dicotyledonous plants that usually have a twisted trunk with thick bark. In general, the fruits are popularly known as “murici” or nance” and consist of a yellow or red small drupe, trilocular, rounded or elongated, about 1.5–2.0 cm in diameter. Those fruits have nutritional characteristics in common, highlighting the presence of lipids, fiber, vitamins A and C, magnesium, calcium, potassium, polyphenols, and carotenoids. To these last constituents, several biological effects have been attributed, highlighting the function of reducing oxidative stress. Other health benefits include anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, liver protective, anticancer, central nervous system modulation, immunomodulation, and wound healing. However, clinical trials attesting to the safety and efficacy of these compounds, as well as the definition of safe doses that mitigate adverse health effects, are still lacking. In summary, Byrsonima crassifolia and Byrsonima verbascifolia are species that stand out in their botanical genus. Although little exploited, a great potential is observed, both for the commercial aspect and economic, nutritional, and above all therapeutic either by the elaboration of products with extra properties.
