Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality worldwide due to the changed lifestyle and dietary habits of people from different origins. Tannins are polyphenolic secondary metabolites present in a variety of plants that are mainly known for their precipitating action on different proteins and characteristic astringent taste. Tannins exhibit a great number of remarkable pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and cardioprotective. Tannins have been systematically studied for their beneficial effects on different types of cardiovascular disorders. Preclinical studies have been conducted on both hydrolyzable and condensed tannins in order to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying their effects in various cardiovascular disorders such as hypertension, arrhythmia, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, and coronary heart disease. Condensed tannins have been studied clinically in order to prove their beneficial effects against the various cardiovascular diseases. A few of the tannins are reported to have a beneficial effect in certain diseases such as coronary artery disease, restrictive cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, endothelial dysfunction, and cardiac hypertrophy. This chapter provides detailed insights into the role of different types of tannins in various cardiovascular disorders.
