This chapter examines the interplay between antisemitic rhetoric among Brazilian elites and the responses of Jewish-Brazilian community leaders. Focusing on a specific issue –the immigration of Jewish refugees during the 1930s – it analyses how Jewish leaders reinterpreted negative stereotypes into positive ones in order to secure the entry of thousands of refugees to this Latin American country. The chapter demonstrates how the “Jewish Question” in Shoah-era Brazil was part of a broader “Ethnic Question,” which also encompassed Brazilian individuals of Asian and Middle Eastern descent.
