Maintaining Standards: Metrology and Statistics Combining to Produce the Primary Reference Materials Which Underpin All Radiocarbon Dating Measurements

Underpinning radiocarbon dating is a series of natural reference materials that have been created as a result of statistical research in first the design of proficiency trials and then secondly the analysis of the resulting data. This short article provides an overview of the statistical contributions to this field, which provides the chronological basis of many other research disciplines including but not limited to Archaeology.
