The term aphasia is defined differently depending on perspectives. Epidemiological data are presented on the basis of the various causes of aphasia. Aphasia subtypes and their clinical features are explained by considering the development of classification systems and the so-called exceptional aphasia forms. The aetiology and pathogenesis of the heterogeneous entity aphasia are demonstrated by focusing on lesions of vascular origin, brain tumours, infections and neurodegenerative disorders. Finally, acquired language disorders from other neurological diseases are presented.
