Pathology and Radiological Anatomy for Radiotherapy of Skin Tumours

The skin is considered the largest organ in the body and therefore radiotherapy (XRT) administered for skin cancers will not only be influenced by properties of the skin tumour itself, but also by its anatomical location on the skin. Consideration of local structures such as bone and cartilage are especially important for common sites of radiation treatment of skin cancer on sites such as the ears, eyelid, inner canthus, and nose. Other properties, such as likelihood of acute reactions, skin breakdown, and infection make sites such as the abdomen and perineum often unsuitable for radiation therapy. In this chapter, we explore properties of common and rare skin malignancies and application of radiation therapy for management of these.
